Dr. rer. nat. Markus Garczarczyk

I was born in 1976 in Poland. My family moved to the north part of Germany, when I was at the primary school level. I completed my secondary education and subsequently undertook military service. At the age of 20, I commenced studies at the University of Applied Sciences in Ravensburg. I relocated to Munich midway through my studies and subsequently gradudated with a degree in engineering.

My interests in science was first piqued during my diploma thesis at the Max-Planck-Institute for Physics in Munich. I elected to complete my university degree at the University of Rostock and to write a doctoral thesis, which I ultimately concluded at the age of 30.

I spent my postdoctoral period at the Institut de Fisica d' Altes Energies (IFAE) in Barcelona, delegated to the Instituto Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) on the Canary Island of La Palma. I have been a member of the MAGIC team since its design phase. MAGIC is a stereo system comprising two imaging air Cherenkov telescopes, designed for the investigation of very high-energy gamma rays. The MAGIC telescopes are situated at the European Northern Observatory atop 2.400 meters on Roque de los Muchachos on the Canary Island of La Palma.

I am currently a staff scientist at the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron (DESY) in Zeuthen, near Berlin. At DESY, I lead the team responsible for the design and construction of Medium-Sized Telescopes for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), the next generation of imaging amospheric Cherenkov telescopes.
